Esther 1:13 tells us: "He immediately consulted with his advisers, who knew all the Persian laws and customs, for he always asked for their advice."
There is something to be learned from the leadership of King Xerxes here. When he was stood up by the Queen he could have made a rash or quick decision that would have affected his reign negatively and had to suffer the consequences, but instead he sought wise counsel.
The next verse goes on to tell us the names of these men that he sought counsel from and that they met regularly.
So I recognize two significant things that we can learn from King Xerxes:
1. No matter what your position, title or rank it is okay to seek wise counsel.
2. Spend time regularly with those that you seek counsel from.
The moment we become to proud to seek wise counsel we are in trouble. We should guard the people that we spend the majority of our time with because they will affect the decisions and choices that we make.
When we only spend time with fools, we make foolish choices that later we regret. The opposite is also true, when we spend time with wise leaders we will begin to see the pattern of our choices change as we begin to make wise choices.
